Papua Highlands Governor Urges Calm, Denies Rebel Extortion Claim as Fake News

Wamena, Indonesia – Governor of Papua Highlands John Tabo has called on residents across the region’s eight regencies to remain calm and committed to maintaining public order, amid the circulation of a video allegedly featuring a separatist leader demanding money from the government.

The video, which has been widely shared on social media, shows Egianus Kogoya, the leader of an armed criminal group (commonly referred to in Indonesia as KKB), claiming to have demanded IDR 5 billion (approximately USD 300,000) from Governor Tabo.

Responding to the footage, the Governor firmly denied the claim and labeled it as misinformation.

“There are issues on social media regarding discomfort in Papua Highlands, including the claim that Egianus demanded IDR 5 billion from the Governor of Papua Highlands. That is not true — it is a hoax,” Governor Tabo stated on Tuesday in Wamena.

He accused irresponsible actors of spreading disinformation in order to destabilize the region.

“The video circulating on social media was created by irresponsible individuals who do not want peace and tranquility to prevail in the eight regencies of Papua Highlands,” he said.

Governor Tabo urged all civil servants and community members to actively contribute to a peaceful environment and not be swayed by provocative online content.

“We invite all elements of society and civil servants in Papua Highlands to maintain public order in their surroundings and not be influenced by hoax news on social media,” he emphasized.

He encouraged public figures and local leaders to promote messages of peace and security throughout the region.

“Civil servants and the public in Papua Highlands must socialize comfort and peace, so everyone can live in harmony,” he added.

In a strongly worded statement, the Governor described the spread of such falsehoods as the work of malicious actors attempting to disrupt local governance and community unity.

“These incidents are the work of devils (irresponsible parties) who want to disturb the peace here. We want our government to function well, and for people to live in harmony and brotherhood,” he said.

Tabo also called on the police, military, and civil government agencies to coordinate and provide accurate, positive information to counter harmful narratives.

“Do not let us be the ones to create an unconducive situation. I believe the people are starting to understand, becoming more aware, and will not be anxious or provoked by online rumors. Let’s work hard together for a better tomorrow,” he concluded.

Governor Tabo reaffirmed that security is key to achieving prosperity and peace for the people of Papua Highlands.
