Mimika Regency Government Commits to Supporting Environmental Conservation Efforts

Timika – The Government of Mimika Regency, Central Papua, is committed to continuously supporting environmental conservation efforts through waste management policies, public education, and cross-sector collaboration.

Acting Assistant II for Economic Affairs and Development of Mimika Regency’s Regional Secretariat, Frans Kambu, stated in Timika on Friday that the progress of a region is not only measured by physical development but also by how well it maintains environmental balance.

“Therefore, we encourage all residents to adopt the habit of sorting and recycling household waste,” he said.

Kambu also hopes that the community will maintain cleanliness in their surroundings, especially water bodies, reduce the use of single-use plastic, and become environmental change agents.

“Rivers are sources of life that must be preserved together, so we ask the community not to dispose of waste carelessly,” he added.

The Mimika Regency Government, together with PT Freeport Indonesia, has also organized a river cleanup activity on Leo Mamiri Street on Wednesday (May 28) as part of the series of events commemorating World Environment Day, which is celebrated every June 5.

Robert Sarwom, Manager of Environmental Central System and Project at PT Freeport Indonesia, stated that several activities will be carried out to commemorate World Environment Day, including cleaning houses of worship, school environments, rivers, and office courtyards.

“The goal is to educate the community to care about environmental cleanliness, thereby increasing awareness to avoid littering,” he said.
