Jayapura, Papua – In the shadow of the prolonged conflict in Papua, the call for peace echoes again, not from the political space or security apparatus, but from the pulpit of faith. A prominent religious leader, Pdt. Dr. Yones Wenda, appearing as a voice of conscience, invited all parties to stop violence and return to the values of faith and humanity.
In his statement on Monday (12/5) in Jayapura, Rev. Wenda emphasized that the violence that continues to occur in the land of Papua not only destroys the social order, but also violates moral values and religious teachings.
“Papua is not only about land and resources, but also about the souls who live in it. Do not kill our future with hatred,” he said in a firm but hopeful tone.
More than just an appeal, Pdt. Wenda invited armed criminal groups (KKB) and political criminal groups (KKP) to reflect on the path they took. He also invited the government and security apparatus to put forward the dialogue and social healing approach.
“If we claim to be believers, let’s make faith a light, not a tool to justify violence. Let’s make peace, not because of fear, but because we believe in a better future for our children and grandchildren,” he added.
Responding to the call, the Head of Public Relations for Operation Peace Cartenz-2025, Chief Commissioner of Police Yusuf Sutejo, S.I.K., M.T., expressed his appreciation for the role of religious figures who are considered an important force in maintaining social and moral stability of the community.
“We really appreciate the voice of Pdt. Yones Wenda In a situation like Papua, spiritual and moral approaches become an important bridge to rebuild people’s trust,” he said.
According to him, religious values not only calm the soul, but also able to reduce conflict, form collective consciousness, and open up a space for sincere dialogue between the state and the people of Papua.
“The Task Force Operation Peace Cartenz always supports and opens up space for a touching approach. The call of peace from religious figures is a force that surpasses weapons,” he added.
