Papua Provincial Government Promotes HKI Certification for 39 Creative Economy Actors

Jayapura, April 28, 2025 — The Papua Provincial Government, through the Department of Tourism and Culture, continues to promote legal protection for creative economy players. A total of 39 creative economy (ekraf) actors have been facilitated to obtain Intellectual Property Rights (HKI) certification, in an effort to strengthen legal certainty over their works and increase the value of their products.

Head of the Creative Economy Division at the Papua Department of Tourism and Culture, Boni Asso, stated that this initiative aims to safeguard local Papuan products and protect them from misuse by other parties.

“With HKI certification, it will indirectly spur the emergence of innovative businesses and attract more investment,” said Boni in Jayapura on Monday.

He added that his office is encouraging creative economy players across nine regencies and cities in Papua to actively register their works to obtain official legal protection.

“Papua is rich in creative economy potential, but many actors are still unaware of the importance of protection through HKI certification,” he noted.

Boni explained that by registering their creations, the players have the opportunity to receive royalties and boost the competitiveness of their products both nationally and internationally, considering the unique characteristics of Papuan creative works.

“We do not want these creative works to be exploited or used by outsiders without permission,” he emphasized.

He also urged local governments in the nine regencies and cities to actively assist their fostered entrepreneurs in registering their works for legal protection.

“Moving forward, we will continue to push this program to ensure that all creative economy players in Papua obtain proper legal protection for their works,” Boni concluded.
