Strengthening Youth’s Strategic Role, Steve Mara Launches Third Book on National Defense from a Papuan Perspective

Jayapura, April 16, 2025 – Young Papuan author Steve Mara continues to make his mark in the world of literature with the launch of his third book, “Catatan Anak Muda Papua Melihat Sistem Pertahanan Negara” (A Papuan Youth’s Perspective on the National Defense System). The book provides an in-depth look at the crucial role of youth, particularly from Papua, in safeguarding national sovereignty amid growing global and domestic challenges.

Comprising 21 chapters, the book was officially released in Jayapura and reflects Steve’s critical observations and thoughts on Indonesia’s defense and security system. He emphasizes the importance of active youth involvement across the three components of national defense: the main force, reserve force, and supporting force.

“Young people cannot be sidelined. They are both the vanguard and the final stronghold in preserving the unity of the Republic of Indonesia,” Steve stated during the book launch.

Steve explained that the motivation behind this book stems from his concern over the socio-political climate in Papua, especially the rampant spread of misinformation that threatens national unity. He believes that Papuan youth need comprehensive understanding and awareness to resist propaganda that promotes separatist ideologies.

“One of the early sections in this book discusses how fake news has become a powerful tool in shaping the mindset of many young Papuans. Without proper education and national literacy, this can pose a serious threat,” he said.

While the book highlights the Papuan context, it is intended for youth across Indonesia. Steve hopes it can serve as a guide and source of reflection for preparing the younger generation to face future challenges in national defense.

More than just analysis, Steve presents his ideas through a grounded and contextual approach, linking national defense issues with the daily realities faced by young people in Papua. This makes the book relevant and accessible to a younger audience.

Through this work, Steve aims to inspire youth to become more aware of their responsibilities to the nation and encourages them to start writing as a way to express their thoughts constructively.

“Writing helps shape critical and constructive thinking. It’s the first step for young people to go from being passive observers to active contributors in safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty,” he concluded.

Previously, Steve authored two other books: “Kita Semua Mau Hidup Damai” (We All Want to Live in Peace) and a biography of Papua’s Chief of Police, Matius Fakhiri. With the release of his third book, Steve further affirms his commitment to building a positive narrative from Papua for Indonesia.
