Wamena — The Jayawijaya Regency Government in the Papua Mountains has warned that individuals involved in distributing or selling alcoholic beverages within the region will face strict penalties as per the regulations of the Republic of Indonesia.
The Jayawijaya Regency has enforced Regional Regulation No. 12 of 2017, which prohibits the production, distribution, and sale of alcoholic beverages. On Saturday (April 12), Jayawijaya Deputy Regent Ronny Elopere stated that offenders will face criminal charges and be sent back to their place of origin.
“We are enforcing the law against those distributing or selling alcoholic beverages who were caught during raids held recently in Wamena,” he said.
Elopere explained that the sale of alcoholic beverages has widespread consequences, including triggering criminal actions. The regency decided to take strict action by sending offenders back to their hometowns as a deterrent measure to prevent potential crimes in Wamena.
“The two individuals caught selling alcoholic beverages in Potikelek have been sent home after serving their prison sentences,” he clarified.
He added that the local government hopes that these offenders will not return to Jayawijaya. “Alcoholic beverages are the root cause of many criminal actions in this area, especially in Wamena. Therefore, we impose strict sanctions on manufacturers, distributors, and sellers,” he emphasized.
The Deputy Regent also urged the community to stop producing, distributing, and selling alcoholic beverages in order to maintain social and economic stability and safety in Jayawijaya.
The symbolic repatriation of the two offenders took place at Wamena Airport, attended by the Deputy Regent, local community leaders, and the Alcohol Eradication Team of Jayawijaya Regency.
