Tragedy in Papua: Gold Miners Fall Victim to KKB Brutality

Yahukimo – Eleven civilians were killed while panning for gold in Yahukimo, Highland Papua. The incident occurred between April 6–7, 2025, at Location 22 and Muara Kum. They are strongly suspected to have been murdered by an armed criminal group (KKB) known as Kodap XVI Yahukimo and Kodap III Ndugama.

The victims suffered injuries from machete attacks, gunshots, and arrows. Six have been identified, while five are still in the process of identification. The tragedy was revealed through the testimony of a survivor who sought refuge in Mabul Village, Koroway District, Asmat Regency.

Another 35 miners managed to escape and are now under the protection of the Indonesian military and police (TNI-Polri) in Mabul Village. Meanwhile, eight others remain missing, and two civilians—a village head named Dani and his wife, Gebi—are believed to have been taken hostage by the KKB. On April 9, twelve survivors arrived at Logpon Port, Dekai.

The Chief of Operation Peace Cartenz 2025, Police Brigadier General Faizal Ramadhani, stated that a joint task force had been deployed to the scene for investigation and evacuation of victims. He strongly condemned the act, labeling it a severe human rights violation against civilians.

Operation Peace Cartenz spokesperson, Police Commissioner Yusuf Sutejo, urged the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information. The task force is committed to pursuing legal action professionally and ensuring the safety of Papua’s civilians from further KKB threats.
