PAK HAM Papua Director Urges Arrest of Armed Criminal Group Responsible for Violence in Anggruk

Jayapura, March 24, 2025 – The tragic violence that occurred in Anggruk District, Yahukimo Regency, Papua Highlands Province, on Friday (March 21, 2025) at 4:00 PM WIT, has left a deep sorrow among the local community. This incident resulted in casualties, injuries, property damage, and forced many civilians to flee in search of safety.

The government, together with security forces, has taken initial steps to document and evacuate the victims while working to provide a sense of security for the affected community. However, demands for justice continue to rise.

The Director of PAK HAM Papua, Mathius Murib, firmly urged security forces to immediately arrest the Armed Criminal Group (KKB) suspected of being responsible for the violence against teachers and healthcare workers in Anggruk.

“Justice must be upheld. The perpetrators and actors behind this heinous act must be arrested and prosecuted under Indonesian law. Claims of involvement by the Free Papua Organization (OPM) in this incident must be proven through a thorough investigation,” said Mathius Murib.

He also emphasized the importance of allowing neutral institutions, such as the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM), full access to objectively reconstruct the incident’s chronology and identify the motives and perpetrators of this act of violence.

“We strongly reject all forms of violence in Papua. Such cruel actions must be stopped, and peace must be realized,” he asserted.

In line with PAK HAM Papua’s vision and mission since 2017, which promotes the theme “Human Rights Enforcement Based on Local Wisdom,” advocacy efforts will continue to protect and advance human rights. With a firm stance against brutality, PAK HAM Papua calls for a more just and peaceful Papua.
