Papua Pegunungan Prepares to Implement Barcode System for Vehicle Taxpayers

WAMENA – The Papua Pegunungan Provincial Government is set to implement a barcode system at Premium Diesel Fuel Stations (APMS) to improve the collection of vehicle tax revenues. This initiative aims to increase the revenue from vehicle taxes, which currently falls short of its potential.

The plan was discussed during a meeting held on Monday, March 17, 2025, involving the Papua Pegunungan Regional Financial and Asset Management Agency (BPPKAD), the police, and Pertamina. The main focus of the meeting was to optimize the local revenue (PAD) through vehicle tax collection.

Laurensius Saluz, Head of the Planning and Evaluation Division of BPPKAD Papua Pegunungan, stated that the local government is responsible for maximizing PAD in line with the provisions of Law No. 1 of 2022. Laurensius explained that the barcode system would require vehicle owners to pay vehicle taxes when refueling at APMS, with the condition that their vehicle’s registration (STNK) is still valid.

“This system is expected to increase the vehicle tax collection rate, which currently only covers 21-27 percent of the total potential,” said Laurensius.

The Papua Pegunungan Provincial Government plans to launch the barcode system in May 2025. To ensure smooth implementation, a series of socialization efforts will be carried out, including face-to-face meetings, the installation of announcements at APMS, and dissemination through mass media.

With the introduction of this system, the government hopes to raise public awareness of their vehicle tax obligations, thereby boosting local revenue and contributing to the welfare of the people of Papua Pegunungan.
