Public Urged to Exercise Restraint, Human Rights Defender Calls for Dialogue to Maintain Public Order

JAYAWIJAYA – Theo Hesegem, a human rights defender and Director of the Papua Justice and Human Integrity Foundation, has issued an appeal to the government and the people of Jayawijaya to safeguard public security and order (Kamtibmas) following the 2024 Regional Elections. This call comes in response to demonstrations held by segments of the Jayawijaya community regarding the lawsuit filed by candidate number 4, Jhon Martin, with the Constitutional Court (MK).

Theo stated that filing a lawsuit with the MK is a normal part of the democratic process. “As citizens, anyone who feels disadvantaged has the right to bring their case to the Constitutional Court. However, I urge the public to refrain from further demonstrations and wait for the MK’s decision,” he said.

He expressed concern about the potential for conflict if demonstrations continue. According to him, escalating tensions could provoke counteractions or provocations that would ultimately harm the wider community.

To prevent such outcomes, Theo suggested that the Papua Pegunungan Provincial Government and Jayawijaya Regency immediately take proactive steps to maintain stability. Among the recommendations he proposed are:

Holding meetings with all community elements, including the government, traditional leaders, women leaders, religious figures, NGOs, and youth representatives.

Issuing appeals through interactive dialogues on RRI, involving community leaders.

Forming panel discussion forums to provide the public with political education.

“It is essential for all of us to foster good political awareness, especially for the people of Jayawijaya and Papua Pegunungan. The MK lawsuit should proceed through legal channels, but local conditions must remain safe and under control,” Theo emphasized.

He also expressed hope that the government would promptly convene meetings with all parties to discuss strategic measures for managing the situation. “We cannot remain idle after the election. If potential issues arise, we must act swiftly to address them for the safety and comfort of the community,” he added.

Theo concluded by reminding that maintaining public order is a shared responsibility. “Let us create a peaceful and harmonious Papua Pegunungan. Do not let political differences disrupt our unity,” he said.
