Jayapura – As Christmas 2024 and New Year 2025 approach, Papua’s prominent Muslim figure, Thaha Al Hamid, called on all residents across Papua to prioritise peace and maintain security during the festive season.
“We must ensure that our Christian brothers and sisters can celebrate Christmas peacefully,” he stated in Jayapura on Saturday (December 14, 2024).
Thaha Al Hamid, a respected figure and former Secretary General of the Papua Presidium Council, also encouraged simplicity in other celebrations, such as the commemoration of Melanesian Day on December 14. He suggested that such events be observed modestly through family worship at home.
“There’s no need for excessive celebrations, like on December 14, to help preserve this year’s peaceful atmosphere,” he advised.
Reflecting on the recently concluded regional elections (Pilkada), Thaha reminded everyone of their shared responsibility to safeguard stability across Papua.
“We’ve just finished the Pilkada. It’s our duty to maintain security and harmony throughout Papua,” he emphasised.
Concluding his statement, Thaha Al Hamid extended warm wishes to the Christian community, expressing hope for a joyful and blessed festive season.
“Happy Christmas 2024 and a blessed New Year 2025. May God bless us all,” he said in closing.
