Papua – Violence perpetrated by the Armed Criminal Group (KKB) in Papua has once again claimed a life. On Tuesday, December 3, 2024, a civilian was reported dead following an attack in the Seredala area, Kilo 2, Dekai District, Yahukimo Regency, Papua Pegunungan. Two other individuals were successfully rescued by joint security forces after the incident.
Ali Kabiay, a prominent Papuan leader and the Head of the Indigenous Youth Organization of the Saireri Region in Nabire, as well as the Secretary-General of the Central Executive Board (DPP) of Barisan Merah Putih Indonesia (RI), and Chairman of the Regional Leadership Council (DPD) of Pemuda Mandala Trikora Papua Province, has strongly condemned the violent actions of the KKB. Kabiay expressed his outrage at the increasing brutality, which he said is instilling fear and insecurity among local communities and claiming the lives of innocent civilians.
“This is an extremely cruel and inhumane act. We strongly condemn the actions of the KKB in Yahukimo. They are not only destroying the social and economic fabric of society but are also threatening peace and security in Papua. We demand that the security forces take decisive action against the perpetrators to prevent further loss of innocent lives,” Kabiay said in his statement.
Kabiay also extended his heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families, acknowledging the profound suffering caused by this tragic incident. He emphasized that both the Indigenous Youth Organization of Saireri and Pemuda Mandala Trikora will continue to support efforts by the security forces to maintain peace and order in Papua.
The incident adds to the growing list of violent attacks carried out by armed groups in the region. Over the past few years, KKB has increasingly targeted both civilians and security personnel, with their motives still the subject of debate. One of the primary demands of the group is for Papua’s independence, although ongoing dialogue with the Indonesian government continues.
Following the attack, the joint security forces quickly mobilized to rescue the victims. While two individuals were saved and are currently in safe condition, authorities are continuing their search for the attackers, who are believed to have fled the scene after carrying out the assault.
This latest incident highlights the ongoing instability in Papua, where armed groups continue to challenge the region’s peace and security. The situation is further complicated by the political tensions surrounding Papua’s future, with a growing demand for independence by separatist groups. The Indonesian government has vowed to continue efforts to restore order while seeking to engage in dialogue to address the underlying grievances of the Papuan people.
International observers continue to monitor developments in the region, where calls for peace and justice grow louder amidst the ongoing violence.
