Jayapura, Papua – Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) and National Police (Polri) have intensified security operations to maintain stability and support ongoing development efforts in the Papua region. Recent police reports indicate that armed separatist groups in Papua, often referred to as Kelompok Kriminal Bersenjata (KKB), have not only targeted military posts but have also attacked civilians suspected of cooperating with the government.
KKB frequently voices demands for separation from Indonesia, citing alleged injustice and marginalization as key issues. In response, both central and local governments have implemented a range of development programs to promote prosperity in Papua, including improvements in healthcare, education, and infrastructure to advance the region’s growth and development.
Security analysts highlight that a dual approach—dialogue and development—is essential to fostering long-term peace in Papua. The Indonesian government is also advised to enhance awareness campaigns on these development efforts among local communities, ensuring that all layers of society experience the benefits.
“A comprehensive approach prioritizing welfare and sustainable development presents a viable long-term solution to mitigate conflicts in Papua. Cooperation among all stakeholders is essential to achieve lasting peace,” said Ngasiman Djoyonegoro, an expert in intelligence, defense, and security.
With a more persuasive approach and a commitment to sustainable policies, it is hoped that armed groups will cease violent actions that endanger the security of the Papuan region.
