Papua- Government President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka were asked to encourage the resolution of violence and armed conflict in the Land of Papua. The issue of violence and armed conflict in the Land of Papua can only be resolved through peaceful dialogue.
Chair of the National Human Rights Commission or Komnas HAM RI, Atnike Nova Sigiro stated that Papua Special Autonomy has been running for more than 20 years, but conflict and violence are still prone to occur in the Land of Papua. The conflict and violence resulted in casualties among civilians, TNI/Polri, and West Papua National Liberation Army combatants.
“This situation also causes social vulnerability which hinders the enjoyment and protection of human rights, such as the difficulty of enforcing the law against perpetrators of violence,” said Atnike.
Atnike said the armed conflict and violence that occurred caused internal displacement. This prolonged conflict and violence hampers access for residents in the Land of Papua to economic, social and cultural rights such as education, health, work and others.
He emphasized that the central government must encourage and support regional governments in all provinces in Tanah Papua.
“Support is important to effectively provide guarantees and protection of human rights for the community, including when facing situations of conflict and community violence,” he explained.
He further said that the security approach implemented by the government must be measured.
“Law enforcement is also important, because it will build public trust and encourage conflict enforcement,” he concluded.
