Community and Security Forces Synergy: Key to the Success of Indonesia’s 2024 Regional Elections

Papua – The 2024 Regional Head Elections (Pilkada) in Indonesia is not only a platform for candidates to win the people’s votes but also an opportunity for the public to express their aspirations and hopes. However, the importance of Pilkada also presents challenges in maintaining security and order. Therefore, the involvement of the community in supporting the security forces is crucial in ensuring peaceful and fair elections.

The Indonesian National Police (Polri) and the military (TNI) play a central role in ensuring security throughout the election process. Their responsibilities include overseeing the voting process, creating a conducive environment, preventing riots, and handling potential conflicts. Various challenges, such as the spread of misinformation, ethnic and religious issues, and mass mobilization that could trigger tensions, have put the role of security forces in the spotlight.

The ability of the security forces to respond to unforeseen situations is one of the indicators of a successful Pilkada. Therefore, synergy between the community and security forces is essential to create a safe environment.

The role of the public in supporting the security forces is significant. One way to contribute is by increasing political awareness and active participation. The public must understand that each vote cast will influence the direction of regional development and future well-being. Hence, education on the importance of making informed decisions is essential.

Additionally, the public can actively participate by reporting suspicious activities or potential conflicts that could disrupt order. By fostering good coordination between the community and security forces, issues can be addressed before they escalate. Involving the public in monitoring helps security forces carry out their duties more effectively.

As stated by the Asmat Tribal Family Union and the Southern Papua Peranakan Solidarity in Merauke, they urged the community and security forces to safeguard the smooth process of the 2024 elections.

This call to action was made through a joint statement signed at Gudang Arang, Kamahedoga Village, Merauke. Several key figures signed the statement, including Elias Asembi, Head of the Asmat Tribe; David Anok, Representative of the Asmat People; Tarsis Rahailyaan, Coordinator of the Southern Papua Peranakan; Damianus Saman, Chairman of the Asmat Youth; and other prominent figures.

They also delivered a seven-point statement related to the South Papua People’s Assembly (MRPS) plenary session’s decision to verify the authenticity of the Indigenous Papuans (OAP) status of four prospective governor and deputy governor pairs for the 2024 election.

Elias Asembi expressed his gratitude to the South Papua People’s Assembly (MRPS) for verifying the Indigenous Papuan (OAP) status of the four candidate pairs, in accordance with Law Number 21 of 2001, which was amended by Law Number 2 of 2021 concerning Special Autonomy for Papua.

Elias emphasized that they would continue to support and monitor every process carried out by the MRPS and the South Papua Provincial Election Commission.

David Anok, Representative of the Asmat People, also called on the people of Southern Papua, especially the Asmat Tribe and Southern Papua Peranakans, not to be provoked by irresponsible parties who reject the MRPS plenary decision. He also thanked those who have given moral support to Apolo Safanpo, a native Papuan candidate for Governor of Southern Papua.

David hopes that security forces will be able to safeguard the entire election process and urged Apolo Safanpo’s supporters to maintain unity, solidarity, and peace throughout Southern Papua.

Political awareness within the community is vital for the success of the 2024 elections. Voters are expected to choose based on informed knowledge of the candidates, rather than emotional or social pressure. Detailed information regarding the candidates’ visions, missions, and programs should be sought.

The 2024 Regional Elections offer a crucial opportunity for the public to elect the right leaders. Public support for the security forces will greatly help in ensuring peaceful and fair elections. Through active participation, heightened political awareness, and constructive communication, the community can significantly contribute to creating a conducive atmosphere.
