Timika – Mimika Regent Johannes Rettob of Central Papua Province has called on the community to stay calm and not be provoked by the recent shooting incident in Alama District on Monday (5/8).
Speaking in Timika on Thursday, Regent Johannes Rettob expressed his personal and the Mimika Regency Government’s condolences over the death of New Zealand pilot Glen Malcolm Conning, who was transporting healthcare workers to the area.
“On behalf of the Mimika Regency Government, I express deep sympathy for this tragic event and hope that such incidents do not happen again,” he said.
Rettob emphasized that incidents like this should not be repeated and urged the public to remain composed and not be swayed by the current situation.
“The helicopter owned by PT Intan Angkasa Air Service, piloted by Glen Malcolm Conning, was utilized by the Mimika Regency Government through the Mimika Health Office to transport healthcare workers to and from the Alama Health Center,” he explained.
He elaborated that the helicopter had been in service for two years, facilitating the transportation of healthcare personnel between Timika and Alama.
“Healthcare workers in Alama District operate on a shift system, with the Health Office rotating staff according to schedule every month,” he added.
Rettob noted that due to limited facilities in Alama District, it is not feasible for healthcare workers to perform their duties continuously, necessitating the shift system, which also applies to other remote health centers.
“All eight healthcare workers have been safely returned to Timika. They will be redeployed once security conditions are confirmed,” he concluded.
