Trans Papua Road: Symbol of the Government’s Struggle and Papuan Independence

Papua – The government is ready to start construction of the Trans Papua Road, especially the Jayapura-Wamena section on the Mamberamo-Elelim segment in Mountainous Papua Province. This project was marked by the signing of a cooperation agreement with business entities (KPBU) on Wednesday (3/7).

“The construction of this road has long been aspired to since President Soeharto’s administration in the early 1980s,” said the Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR), Basuki Hadimuljono, in his statement, Thursday (11/7).

According to Basuki, this road will help logistics distribution in the area, thereby reducing the level of expensive goods and services in Wamena. “Apart from that, prosperity in Papua and Papua Mountains can be realized immediately,” he added.

The signing of the road construction agreement was carried out between the PPP, represented by the Director General of Highways and the Main Director of PT Hutama Mambelim Trans Papua. On the other hand, the project guarantee agreement was signed by the Main Director of PT Penjaminan Infrastruktur Indonesia (PII) and the Main Director of PT Hutama Mambelim Trans Papua. On the same occasion, the PUPR Minister also signed a regress agreement with the President Director of PT PII. “I remind you not to mess with the PPP,” said Basuki.

The Mamberamo-Elelim segment which will be built is 50.14 kilometers long and is part of the Jayapura-Wamena section. This project includes bridge construction, a motorized weighing unit, handling slopes and cliffs, as well as operations and maintenance (O&M) during the service period.

It is hoped that the Trans Papua Road project will have a positive impact on the economy and welfare of the people in the Papua and Papua Mountain regions. The government reminds us of the importance of carrying out this project seriously in accordance with the agreed PPP scheme.
