Papua_ On August 2 1969, the Determination of Popular Opinion (Pepera) confirmed that Papua was part of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI). Every year, December 1 is celebrated as West Papua Proclamation Day by several groups. However, the Pepera results show that the Papuan people unanimously chose to join Indonesia.
Chairman of the Papua and West Papua Deliberative Body (Bamus), Willem Frans Ansanay, emphasized that the Pepera results clearly show that Papua is part of Indonesia. According to him, this decision has been recognized internationally.
“I underline that it is clear (Papua is included in the Republic of Indonesia). The facts have proven that this will not produce results. The international level is clear that Papua is included in the Republic of Indonesia,” said Willem Frans Ansanay.
Willem Frans Ansanay also said that the central government had taken the right steps to advance Papua, one of which was through providing Special Autonomy Funds. According to him, this is proof of the government’s commitment to improving and developing Papua.
“The government has taken very appropriate steps for Papua and has approved Special Autonomy funds for Papua,” he said.
Chairman of the Regional Leadership Council (DPD) of the Mandala Trikora Youth for Papua Province, Ali Kabiay, added that December 1 as Papuan Independence Day was just a dream. He emphasized that Papua had become independent with Indonesia on August 17.
“December 1 is just a dream because we became independent on August 17. The UN has declared Papua a legitimate part of Indonesia. Forming a country is not an easy thing and is not as easy as turning the palm of your hand,” said Ali Kabiay.
The Act of 2 August 1969 is legal proof that Papua is part of the Republic of Indonesia. International recognition of these results further strengthens Papua’s status within Indonesian territory. The steps taken by the central government, including the provision of Special Autonomy Funds, demonstrate a commitment to developing Papua and improving the welfare of its people.
