Papua – Receiving criticism of the security forces in Papua by the Moderator of the Papuan Church Council (DGP), Rev. Benny Giay, a Papuan figure who is also Deputy Chair II of the MRP, Max Abner Ohee, gave his views.

He believes that the latest data shows that the presence of TNI-Polri security forces from outside Papua has made a significant positive contribution. According to data released by the State Intelligence Agency (BIN), the deployment of personnel from outside Papua has succeeded in reducing the level of violence and crime in the region.

“This was especially visible after incidents of racist speech against Papuan students in Surabaya in 2019, where the increase in security forces helped stabilize the situation and prevent a larger escalation of the conflict,” he said.

The presence of the authorities has also provided a sense of security and protection for the Papuan people from threats from armed groups such as the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB).

“The claim that all the Papuans arrested were KKB is not completely true, because the data shows that the investigations carried out by the security forces were very thorough and evidence-based,” he continued.

Meanwhile, criticism of the interrogation process by security forces needs to be seen from a broader perspective. Ohe said that an interrogation process that is carried out professionally and based on law is indeed important, but this must also be balanced with efforts to reveal the truth and ensure public safety.

In addition, the role of independent local, national and international media remains important in providing transparency and accountability in handling cases of violence. However, the claim that the media does not want to carry out classification does not fully reflect reality, because many media actively carry out investigations and report news objectively.

Thus, it also needs to be acknowledged that the presence of security forces from outside Papua has provided real benefits in maintaining security and stability in the Land of Papua.

“With a balanced approach between security and evidence-based law enforcement, it is hoped that conflicts in this region can be resolved more effectively and fairly for all parties involved,” concluded Max Ohee.
