Papua- The National Human Rights Commission Representative for Papua has urged the local police to take firm action against the perpetrators of the shooting of two members of the National Police and residents in Paniai Regency, Central Papua.
“But also by ensuring that members’ actions in law enforcement efforts can be carried out professionally, objectively and accountably and uphold the values and principles of human rights (HAM),” said the Chair of Human Rights Enforcement and Promotion of the National Human Rights Commission, Papua Representative, Melchior Weruin.
According to Weruin, Komnas HAM is paying serious attention to this case and will continue to monitor and coordinate with various parties regarding monitoring developments and law enforcement efforts.
“We also ask that the Paniai regent take an active part in encouraging and creating a conducive security situation by involving all related parties, such as traditional community leaders and religious leaders,” he said.
He explained that Komnas HAM Papua also urged civilian armed groups not to carry out acts of violence that resulted in loss of life and property and made security conditions in Paniai Regency unconducive.
“We also hope that the Governor of Central Papua together with the local regional leadership coordination forum (forkopimda) can pay attention to cases of violence that continue to occur in the area,” he said again.
Weruin added that the resolution of cases of violence in Paniai Regency must be carried out comprehensively, including curbing and controlling the existence of illegal mining.
“It is hoped that local regional leaders will be more proactive in responding to the violence situation in Paniai Regency and its surroundings,” he concluded.
