Papuan Traditional Leaders Condemn Threats Against Nduga Regent Amid Hostage Negotiations

Papua – Nduga Regent Edison Gwijangge is actively engaged in negotiations to secure the release of a hostage pilot in Nduga Regency, Papua. However, during these negotiations, the Regent, representing the government, faced threats from the National Command of the National Liberation Army (TPNPB) of the Free Papua Organization (OPM).

Spokesperson Sebby Sambom conveyed this threat on Wednesday (31/1/2024), as reported by wartaplus.com.

The threat of violence from TPNPB OPM against Regent Gwijangge prompted a strong response from Papuan Traditional Leader Herman Albert Yoku. Yoku denounced Sambom’s statement as inhumane, emphasizing that the Regent’s role is to negotiate for peace and ensure the safe release of hostages.

“Mr. Edison Gwijangge’s duty is to fulfill his role as a negotiator responsibly, prioritizing the well-being of the people of Nduga. He is committed to conducting negotiations in the best possible manner,” said Yoku.

Yoku further clarified that the Regent of Nduga serves as a representative of the community and is not involved in personal relationships. Therefore, TPNPB OPM should distinguish personal matters from the official negotiating duties carried out by the Regent.

“The Regent represents the community, not any individual’s family or relatives. It is my hope that TPNPB OPM understands that these negotiations aim for liberation without resorting to violence,” he emphasized.

Yoku strongly condemned the threat, labeling it as a detrimental and disturbing act for society.

“The statements and actions of TPNPB OPM, threatening the Regent of Nduga, display not only recklessness but also inhumanity. They must realize that conflicts cannot be resolved through intimidation and violent threats. Conversely, such a stance will only undermine peaceful efforts to secure the release of hostages. It is time for TPNPB OPM to recognize that policies indifferent to the safety and welfare of the community constitute inhumane actions,” stated Yoku.
