Jayapura – The Papua Regional Police together with the Regional Government (Pemda) of Yahukimo Regency declared an emergency status for disaster response last week in Amuma District, Yahukimo, Papua Mountains.
Due to the Food Crisis status, 24 people are reported to have died, apart from that, more than 12 thousand residents in dozens of villages in Amuma District are currently losing their food sources due to extreme weather.
“From information on the ground in Amuma District, currently 24 residents have died as a result of the impact of the famine,” said Head of Public Relations of the Papua Police, Kombes. Pol. Ignatius Benny Ady Prabowo, S.H., S.I.K., M.Kom., Wednesday (25/10/23).
He explained that extreme weather in Amuma District, in Yahukimo has been occurring since August 2023.
“This famine is thought to be caused by extreme weather that has caused residents’ crops and livestock to die,” explained Commissioner Benny.
According to him, there are 13 villages in the area which are currently a priority for saving from famine. However, efforts to send aid to the area are indeed difficult.
“The only access to the area can only be done by helicopter. “And the delivery of aid to the area has already begun,” he explained.
It is known that the famine in the Yahukimo region, Papua Mountains, is more worrying than the similar conditions that occurred in Puncak Regency, Central Papua in August 2023.
