Jayapura – The Dekai District General Election Commission (KPU) office in Yahukimo Regency, Papua, reportedly caught fire at 08.48 Eastern Indonesian Time, Sunday (6/8/2023). Currently, an investigation is being carried out to uncover the cause of the burning of the building.
Head of Public Relations of the Papua Regional Police, Kombes Pol. Ignatius Benny Ady Prabowo, S.H., S.I.K., M.Kom., in his statement, revealed that this information originated when a member of the Yahukimo Police reported the fire incident to the Yahukimo Police Integrated Service Center (SPKT) via the HT radio communication device.
The joint team consisting of Yahukimo Police personnel and the Cartenz Damai Task Force responded quickly to the report.
“When the joint team arrived at the location, the Dekai District KPU Office building was completely burnt and the fire had been extinguished. Members of the Yahukimo Police Criminal Investigation Unit (Sat Reskrim) conducted a crime scene (TKP) investigation to collect evidence and information regarding this incident,” explained the Head of Public Relations.
Benny said that no fatalities were reported as a result of the fire. The evidence that was found and secured at the crime scene included one piece of burnt zinc, one piece of burnt wood, one piece of glass, one burnt iron door, and one burnt latch.
“Currently, the Yahukimo Police are carrying out investigations and further investigations to identify the exact cause of the fire and the motive behind this incident,” he stated.
The Head of Public Relations also appealed to all people in Yahukimo Regency to remain calm and alert and not to be provoked by provocations or unverified issues.
“Let’s try to maintain calm and provide support to the police to uncover the cause of the fire at the Dekai District KPU Office,” added Kombes Benny.
