Local Government and TNI-Polri Officials Attend Consolidation Meeting in Dogiyai After Riots

Jayapura – Dogiyai Police Station became the location for high-ranking officials to hold a consolidation meeting after the riots that occurred in Dogiyai Regency.

The meeting held on Saturday (15/7/2023) was chaired by DANREM 173/PVB, Brigadier General Franz Yohanes Purba, S.I.P, M.M., and attended by representatives of the local government, a number of Papua Police Principal Officials, and elements of the TNI as well as several community leaders.

The meeting held was a response to the blockade carried out by a group of unknown people (OTK) in Idakebo village. The incident involved seven OTKs who blocked the road by throwing axes at cars, causing broken glass and minor injuries to an individual on the left temple.

The Dogiyai Police Chief, Kompol Sarraju, S.H., reported that police officers had attempted to disperse the roadblock activity carried out by unknown assailants in Idakebo village.

However, when members got out of the vehicle, one OTK from behind threw an axe at the car, causing damage and injuries to members who were hit. Furthermore, police members evacuated the injured to Madi Hospital and when returning from Madi Hospital to Pogito Village, there was another blockade by OTK. The local village head asked for help, but was met with resistance so members were forced to return to Deiyai Regency. The situation in the field is still heating up, with some youths provoking tension. The police ordered members to remain vigilant and alert and to follow up the situation closely.

“In addition, Dogiyai district also experienced disruption of electricity and communication services. Members of the police who went to the scene experienced blockades and threats from the local community. In fact, arson and sounds of fighting still occur until nighttime,” explained the Police Chief.

He continued, traffic flow from Dogiyai to Deyai and Paniai was hampered due to roadblocks.

It is known that the situation in the jurisdiction of Dogiyai Police after the incident is gradually conducive. The Police Chief also asked all residents to jointly maintain Kamtibmas and not commit criminal acts that could harm themselves or others.

“And to residents who are outside the Dogiyai Regency not to provoke residents by spreading issues that are not necessarily the truth,” he said.

During the meeting, the Regent of Dogiyai Regency, Drs. Petrus Agapa, M.Si, said that when the incident occurred, the Regional Government was holding a visit by the Vice President in Nabire for the laying of the construction of the Central Papua Province office.

“Until now, the local government and OPD (Regional Apparatus Organization) have not received adequate information regarding the chronology of events from both the police and the local community,” he said.

Several OPD and DPRD members also visited Idakebo village to seek first-hand information about the incident. However, they were blocked by the local community who put up a barrier in front of the district office.

The meeting is expected to be a forum to resolve the problem properly and restore smooth road access from Dogiyai to Deyai. All parties were asked to play an active role in handling the ongoing crisis situation, so that security and stability in Dogiyai Regency can be restored.
