Jayapura – The Papuan Police sent Brimob troops from Nabire Regency to Dogiyai Regency, Central Papua, to help deal with riots in the area.
Papua Police Chief Inspector General Pol Mathius Fakhiri said his party had sent a platoon of Brimob to Dogiyai. Apart from that, the Papua Regional Police have also assigned the head of the operations bureau and the head of the profession and security sector (propam) to the area.
The riot in Dogiyai started when a group of unknown residents ambushed and attacked a vehicle containing members of the Cartenz Peace Task Force who were going to Paniai to accompany their sick colleague, on Thursday, 13 July 2023.
After the ambush and attack, it was reported that there were acts of arson of residents’ houses by unknown people until Friday morning.
“There have been no reports regarding how many houses have been burnt, including the fatalities,” said Mathius Faakhiri.
The riot in Dogiyai started when a car containing members of the Cartenz Damai Task Force was about to take one of the sick officers for treatment to the Paniai Hospital. The car was then intercepted by a group of unknown residents when it was passing through Idakebo Village, Kamu Utara District.
When the vehicle stopped, suddenly a group of unknown people attacked them by throwing axes at the car, causing the glass to break and hitting members of the car.
The group also attacked and tried to seize the firearms that the members were carrying, resulting in shots being fired and the group of unidentified people being chased towards the mountains.
