GKI Mimika Calls on Congregation to Humble Themselves and Pray Amid Rising Social Tensions

Mimika — The Evangelical Christian Church (GKI) in Tanah Papua, Mimika Classis, has urged all congregants and the wider community to humble themselves, pray, and reflect on the meaning of the Advent Season amid rising social and political tensions that have recently created an increasingly uneasy atmosphere in Mimika Regency.

In an official statement, GKI Mimika expressed deep concern over emerging social symptoms, inter-community tensions, and potential acts of intolerance that could disrupt peace and social stability. The Church emphasized that these challenging circumstances must be met with genuine faith — through humility, prayer, and a deeper contemplation of Christ’s love and sacrifice.

The Chairman of GKI Mimika Classis, Rev. Junus M. Bonsapia, S.Th., highlighted that the Advent Season should be a moment for spiritual reflection, repentance, and preparing the heart to welcome the Light of the World. He invited all GKI members and the people of Mimika to seek God’s wisdom to navigate daily life with discernment.

“We call on every GKI member and the whole community of Mimika to remain steadfast in prayer, to humble ourselves before God, and ask for His wisdom, so that we may be strengthened to stay away from social–political tensions, acts of intolerance, and potential instability that threaten peace in this region,” he stated.

GKI Mimika reaffirmed its commitment to being a unifying space — a place where fellowship is nurtured, dialogue is prioritized, and mutual support is practiced in love. The Church encouraged the public to remain calm, wise, and not easily influenced by unverified information, especially amid the many developing issues circulating in the community.

In closing its appeal, GKI Mimika called on all believers to continue hoping, praying, and standing together to safeguard Mimika as a peaceful and secure shared home.

“May the Light of Christ guide our steps, illuminate our decisions, and strengthen us to overcome every challenge with love and steadfast faith,” Rev. Junus concluded.
