Ahead of OPM Anniversary on December 1, Police Urge Papuan Residents Not to Be Provoked

Sentani – The Jayapura District Police have urged the public to remain calm and stay alert to provocations from separatist groups ahead of December 1, which is often commemorated as Papua Independence Day or the anniversary of the Free Papua Organization (OPM).

Jayapura Police Chief AKBP Umar Nasatekay said that public calm is crucial to the success of security efforts, as vulnerable situations often arise due to the spread of unverified information.

“I urge the community to remain calm and not be provoked by calls that could potentially trigger security disturbances ahead of December 1,” Umar said in Sentani, as quoted from Antara, Sunday (30/11/2025).

According to Umar, several groups often take advantage of the OPM anniversary to spread exaggerated narratives, so the public needs to be more cautious in responding to any circulating information.

“We must stay focused on maintaining regional stability so community activities can run safely without pressure from unclear issues,” he said.

He explained that security forces continue to increase patrols and field monitoring to ensure the security situation remains under control, so the public should not feel worried.

“I hope residents prioritize calmness so the region remains conducive and is not easily disturbed by provocative issues as we approach the date,” he stated.

He added that coordination among security personnel continues to be strengthened, including monitoring potential hotspots that could become locations for disturbances.

“Let us maintain unity and avoid provocations so Jayapura Regency can enter December 1 in a safe and peaceful atmosphere,” he said.

He emphasized that the success of security operations does not only depend on personnel but also on public support in maintaining a conducive environment.

“We need support from all residents within the jurisdiction of the Jayapura District Police so that these security efforts can run optimally,” he said.

So far, authorities have prepared layered security measures to anticipate potential disturbances that may arise ahead of the 2025 OPM anniversary.

“We hope residents remain cooperative during patrols or inspections, as everything is aimed at maintaining collective security,” he added.

He said security operations will continue to prioritize a humane approach so that people feel safe and comfortable in carrying out their daily activities.

“We ensure that all officers will work professionally in maintaining security in Jayapura Regency,” he concluded.
