Puncak Jaya on the Path to Peace: 8,789 Arrows and Hundreds of Machetes Destroyed

Puncak Jaya, April 10, 2025 — Central Papua Police Chief Brig. Gen. Alfred Papare, S.I.K, together with Commander of Military Resort 173/PVB Brig. Gen. Fritz Willem Ricard Pellomania, S.E, led the destruction of confiscated weapons and sharp tools seized by joint TNI-Police forces during the regional election period in Puncak Jaya Regency.

The event was held at the Holy Spirit Monument Square in Kota Baru Mulia and was attended by local government officials (Forkopimda), traditional leaders, religious figures, and representatives from both camps supporting candidate pairs 01 and 02.

During the ceremony, thousands of weapons were destroyed, including 8,789 arrows, 462 bowstrings, 463 bows, 2,500 slingshots, 1 homemade slingshot, 18 axes, 512 machetes, 2 air rifles, and 1 handheld radio. The destruction was a symbolic gesture of mutual commitment to peace following the recent post-election conflict.

In his speech, the Central Papua Police Chief emphasized that the event served as a clear symbol of the peace agreement between both sides. “This is a major step to show the world that we truly seek peace. We declared peace under the sky, witnessed by God, nature, and all the people,” said Brig. Gen. Alfred Papare.

He also explained that the Governor of Central Papua had made ongoing efforts to mediate with both candidate pairs. Although initially reluctant to come to Mulia, authorities and the local government continued working to create a safe and stable environment. “We will keep supporting every peace initiative and oversee the governmental transition to ensure a secure and peaceful process,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Commander of Military Resort 173/PVB stated that the destruction of weapons was a concrete sign that the conflict had ended. While customary traditions of the Dani tribe are respected, the situation is now considered officially resolved. “Today we burn these weapons as a true sign of peace. Our hope is that this peace endures—not just for today, but for the future,” he said.

Acting Regent of Puncak Jaya, Yopi Murib, S.E., M.M., affirmed that the presence of the TNI and Police is not meant to intimidate, but to ensure the safety and daily life of Mulia’s residents. He assured that the local government remains committed to supporting the recovery process and maintaining public order.

With this step forward, Puncak Jaya is expected to enter a new era of peace and progress, leaving behind past conflicts and focusing on reconciliation and development.
