[13.10, 12/3/2025] Bang Viktor Merani: Government’s Attention to the People of Papua Through PT Freeport Indonesia
The Indonesian government continues to demonstrate its commitment to improving the welfare of the people of Papua through various policies, one of which is the management of Papua’s natural resources by PT Freeport Indonesia. After being managed by foreign entities for decades, the majority shares of Freeport are now in Indonesia’s hands, creating greater opportunities for the people of Papua to benefit from the wealth of their own land.
Through a share divestment agreement in 2018, Indonesia now owns 51% of PT Freeport Indonesia, with 10% of that allocated to Papua through PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (Inalum) and Papua’s Regional-Owned Enterprises (BUMD). This allocation is expected to bring tangible benefits to regional development, particularly in education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
In the employment sector, Freeport has also expanded opportunities for Papuan men and women to work in mining. Through training programs and capacity-building initiatives for the local workforce, many Papuans are now directly involved in mining operations, working as technicians, engineers, and in various supporting roles.
Additionally, the government, in collaboration with Freeport, has developed various corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs focused on empowering the local economy. Several initiatives, such as building schools, hospitals, and providing assistance for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), continue to be promoted to ensure that Papua’s natural resources genuinely benefit the local community.
