Wamena – The Regional Office of National Unity and Politics (Bakesbangpol) of Papua Pegunungan has announced that the number of seats in the Papua Pegunungan House of Representatives (DPRP) through the special autonomy (otsus) mechanism is 11.
Agustinus Koway, Head of Bakesbangpol Papua Pegunungan, explained on Wednesday that the 11 seats represent a quarter of the total 45 seats allocated through the political party selection route. “According to the regulations, a quarter of the total seats, which amounts to 11 seats, are currently in the process,” he said.
Koway further explained that the 11 DPRP seats through the otsus route must adhere to legal provisions, including a 30 percent quota for women. “Therefore, out of the 11 seats, 30 percent must be allocated to women, which means three seats. The selection committee (pansel) is fully aware of this requirement,” he stated.
To ensure a transparent and accountable selection process, the pansel has undertaken various preparations, including public outreach and candidate registration. “We have made various preparations to ensure the selection process runs smoothly and transparently,” he added.
The pansel’s work will ultimately establish 33 permanent candidates, comprising nine women and 24 men. “From the beginning, we have informed the pansel about the requirements,” Koway said. Out of these 33 candidates, 11 will be selected as DPRP members, while the remainder will be placed on a waiting list.
“If during the term any of the 11 selected candidates face permanent impediments, the remaining candidates will fill the positions according to their selection ranking,” Koway explained. He emphasized that Bakesbangpol is committed to overseeing the selection process to ensure it complies with the regulations and produces qualified DPRP members representing the interests of the Papua Pegunungan community.
Koway also expressed his appreciation for the hard work of the selection committee. “I would like to thank the pansel team for their dedication in ensuring the selection process runs smoothly,” he concluded.
